Army suicides reported up again — at 108
By PAULINE JELINEK, Associated Press Writer 19 minutes ago
The number of Army suicides increased again last year, amid the most violent year yet in both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
Two defense officials said Thursday that 108 troops committed suicide in 2007, six more than the previous year. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the full report on the deaths wasn't being released until later Thursday.
About a quarter of the deaths occurred in Iraq.
The overall toll was the highest in many years, and it was unclear when, if ever, it was previously that high. Immediately available Army records go back only to 1990 and the figure then was lower — at 102 — for that year as well as 1991.
The 108 confirmed deaths in 2007 among active duty soldier and National Guard and Reserve troops that had been activated was lower than previously feared. Preliminary figures released in January showed as many as 121 troops may have killed themselves, but a number of the deaths were still being investigated then and have since been determined to have resulted from other causes, the officials said.
Suicides have been rising almost steadily during the five-year-old war in Iraq and nearly seven-year-old war in Afghanistan.
The 108 deaths last year followed 102 in 2006, 85 in 2005 and 67 in 2004.
The increases come despite a host of efforts to improve the mental health of a force stressed by long and repeated tours of duty. Increasing the strain on the force last year was the extension of deployments to 15 months from 12 months, a practice that is being terminated this year.
More U.S. troops died in hostilities in 2007 than in any of the previous years in Iraq and Afghanistan. Overall violence increased in Afghanistan with a Taliban resurgence and overall deaths increased in Iraq, even as violence there declined in the second half of the year.

WORDLESS-ly yours,
TallPockets.
I this same article in the local paper - amazing - and nobody wants to talk about it!!!!
the mental health system in this country is broken -inside and outside of the military!
ron
It TRULY BAFFLES and ANGERS me to NO end, dear Azron, the LACK of COMMENTARY I see HERE and ELSEWHERE regarding such LACK of NEEDED TROOP/SOLIDER TREATMENTS and PROBLEMS!
I always often HEAR how, "WE support the troops" saying flying off folk's lips but RARELY do I SEE such in ACTION and COMMENTARY???
WHY do I NOT see such reactions from the AMERICAN PEOPLES I ASK ALL who READ this post of MINE and OTHER similar type posts?
Yet, folks will BLOG about ANY OTHER silly post subject READILY.???????????????????????????????????????????????
TallPockets, over and out.
I have a NUMBER of POSTS here/THREADS here ABOUT OUR beloved folks in UNIFORM who serve ALL of US.
They are the LEAST commented on of ALL I post. I also see the same PATTERN with SIMILAR type posts at OTHER sites. WHY, I again ask? WHY?
I just do NOT understand how WE, THE PEOPLE, can CONTINUE to ALLOW such LACK of treatments be given to THOSE WHO SERVED whenver, wherever, how much it costs, etc.!?
I also completely FAIL to UNDERSTAND how ANY president or military can CONTINUE to RE-TOUR and EXTEND RE-TOUR the SAME NUMBER of LIMITED troops OVER AND OVER AND OVER again?
At WHAT point, Dear Fairweather, does any REASONABLE thinking AMERICAN, regardless of POLITICS or LACK of such, figure out that we NEED MORE troops to SHARE the burden or we need to REFIGURE the HOW we USE them without BURNING THEM OUT? -- PHYSICALLY & MENTALLY!
The SILENCE from CITIZENS of ALL persuasions that THIS DUMB old man hears IS "DEAFENING".
DISHONORABLY DEAFENING!
FOR SHAME< AMERICA!!!
FOR SHAME< this old man says ....
TallPockets.
Have YOU? .....
(1) EMAILED, TELEPHONED, WRITTEN, FAXED YOUR elected REPS in YOUR STATE? Both FEDERAL reps and STATE elected reps. And INSISTED that THEY make SURE that OUR troops have ALL they need. In BATTLE and AFTER battle no matter the cost?
(2) Attended the FUNERAL service of a LOCAL soldier in YOUR area.
(3) At LEAST sent a CONDOLENCE CARD in the MAIL to the FAMILY of said lost SOLDIER's loved ones?
(4) Visited YOUR local VFW or AMERICAN LEGION post IN PERSON to MEET those who HAVE served US and to THANK them for their service? And, to ASK them what THEY NEED?
If YOU have done NONE of the above, I MOST humbly and honestly ASK, "WHY NOT?"
For, in THIS DUMB old man's viewpoint, if you have DONE NONE of the above in some kind of manner, YOU do NOT support OUR troops.
SALUTE to those who have, do and will serve AND to their families and loved ones who will either have to deal with NOT having them around ever again or will have to deal with them as they ARE both physically and or mentally for the rest of THEIR LIVES.
